Introduction to Yilan ChungDau Bilingual Elementary School Curriculums and Features

  Located on Jhuangwei Town, Yilan County, the scenic Lan-Yang Plain, and the home of Hami melon of Taiwan. Chung-Dau Bilingual Elementary School is surrounded by rice fields full of fresh air, panoramic views, tranquility from the fields, and beauty of sounds of nature. Students can leisurely overlook the Snowy Mountains, observe the changes of four seasons and stars at night. This countryside environment can help students build up good-natured, pure, and kindhearted personalities. In order to help students to become future leaders in all walks of life, the curriculum provided focuses on the cultivation of basic knowledge, human temperament, international outlooks, and care for the hometown, especially bilingual education. Our core curricula include English, Chinese classical literature and reading, scientific exploration and research, arts, life education.

  Additional featured courses of the School are arranged by following the Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines, including Chinese Calligraphy, violin music, Chinese martial arts, swimming, classical Chinese poetry and the classics (Selected 240). Through multiple and well-desighed curricula, the performance of students in Chung-Dau Bilingual Elementary School in English communication, reading, and writing is outstanding.

  After formal curriculums, school also provides talent courses every day. The provided elective courses include: individual violin teaching, martial arts, rollerblading, table tennis, dancing, work instructions, whole brain math, creative science research, and ...etc.

  Good character is a must-have for future leaders. The character education methods focus on the multi-learning methods, such as model learning (Example), speculation inspiration (Explanation), advising and exhortation (Exhortation), environmental shaping (Environment), service learning (Experience), and self-expectations (Expectation). As for character education, we set five core values for our school: honesty, respect, caring, law-abiding, and polite. Through teaching strategies such as teacher demonstration, value clarification, theoretical discussions, behavior guidance, service learning, and self-motivation enhancement, we shape students’ correct cognition, emotion, and behavioral approach. Nurtured through our school’s education, children with a sincere attitude to be educated will be able to reach the "good life education", "good knowledge studious support", and "good character training", the "Three Goods"; and "noble character," "noble quality ",and "noble taste of life", the “Three Nobles".

  The curriculum guidelines promulgated by the Ministry of Education of Republic of China provides seven areas of elemetary school learning programs, including languages (Chinese, English, and native language), health and physical education, mathematics, social studies, arts and humanities, natural and life sciences, and integrative activities.

  School's ESL program refers to the arrangements of the United States, Singapore and the national bilingual teaching experiment, which is not only compatible for students from domestic educational system to refine their own second language learning needs, but also for students who have been stationed overseas to link the prior learning experience. The contents include: literature, science, mathematics, art, health, conversation and grammar, listening, and speaking and writing, which make students proficient in everything.

  School has the following characteristics in teaching and counseling systems,
1. Small Class Teaching
a. School persists to small class teaching to enhance teaching and caring qualities. We follow the principle that each class only consists of 30 students (standard class size of private schools is 42 by educational administration).
b. When the class size increases up to 34 people due to transfer, it’ll be re-arranged as 2 classes in the next academic year.

2. Comprehensive mentor and voluntary Individual guidance system
a. A mentor-based system primarily by Chinese class teachers.
b. English tutors are added in each English group (some are part-time Chinese mentors).
c. From entering until graduation from the school, each student is assigned to an adopting teacher who takes care of their learning and life adjustment, and timely contacts their subject teachers and parents to promote positive and fun learning and seamless cares for students.

3. Self-care counseling and academic guidance for boarders are both emphasized
a. Tutoring is arranged for boarders every night (6-8 persons per one instructor to solve students’ questions of studies and homework.
b. Teachers are assigned to boarders to provide self-care education and care in the evening.
c. Living behavior management practices and reward system for good are set for boarders.
d. "Life Sharing Party" is held monthly for boarders to enhance their warm memories of school residential life.

4. Excellent professional teaching team
a. Leading executive cadres --- Vice Principal, Mr. Chang Hui-Hsiung is hired in charge of the school affairs (Vice- principal Chang honorees the Ministry of Education’s excellent Principal Leadership Awards, and had been a former Taipei City elementary school principal for 22 years); also hired are professional and quality cadres.
b. Chinese teaching team --- qualified and experienced elementary school teachers, including language, nature, art, music, mathematics, social, health and physical education teachers in all areas.
c. English teaching team --- the Ministry of Education certified domestic English teachers, and experienced quality foreign teachers.
d. ESL teaching --- planning a beneficial outcome of teaching system formed by foreign and domestic teachers.

5. Higher Education Guidance
Graduates can enter bilingual junior high school department, or go abroad for higher education (the mercenary system will be implemented by our country in the future, thus there won’t be military service issues).
